Sword Typology

The Oakeshott Medieval Sword Typology

These brief descriptions are based on the typology of Ewart Oakeshott first detailed in his Sword in The Age of Chivalry (1964, revised 1981) and refined in his Record of the Medieval Sword (1991) and Sword in Hand (2001) and in conversations with the author. A thorough study of these works and articles written by Mr. Oakeshott are recommended to fully grasp the typology and make it as useful as possible to the collector and scholar of the sword.

The Oakeshott Institute would also highly recommend Vikingsword.com as an exceptional site for information and research.
